Alternate Professional Learning- Call to Action

In today’s blended learning classrooms, where students interact with both in-person instruction and digital tools, effective professional development for educators is more important than ever. Teachers tasked with delivering 6th grade Reading and Language Arts (RLA) curriculum need to be well-equipped not only with a deep understanding of the content but also with the ability to navigate and teach district-approved technology applications. These tools are essential in engaging students and enhancing their learning experience, but they also require teachers to continuously refine their digital literacy and instructional strategies.

Professional learning opportunities that focus on both curriculum mastery and the integration of technology are vital for empowering educators to meet the diverse needs of their students, ensuring that technology serves as a powerful supplement to the curriculum, not a distraction. With ongoing support and training, teachers will be better prepared to foster student success in both traditional and tech-enhanced learning environments.

Why:  As an educator, I’ve experienced the challenges that come with traditional professional development. I’ve attended countless one-time workshops that, while well-intentioned, often fail to provide the depth and relevance I need to implement meaningful changes in my classroom. That’s why I’ve developed a professional learning model that’s designed specifically for teachers like me—those who want engaging, content-specific, and ongoing support throughout the year. My goal is to ensure that every teacher has the tools, time, and space to truly grow and refine their practice.

What: My professional learning approach focuses on content-specific learning that’s tailored to teachers’ sixth grade, reading and langugae arts teahers who teach a double block schedule. Instead of generic sessions, teachers receive training that directly aligns with the challenges and needs they face in their own classrooms. This model includes multiple sessions spread throughout the school year, allowing for continuous learning rather than one-time events. Teachers actively engage in hands-on activities, group discussions, and real-world problem-solving exercises, making the learning not only more relevant but also more impactful.

How: I have chosen to use a blended learning approach because I believe professional development should be ongoing, meaningful, and mirror what we want to see from our students. Traditional PD often lacks the necessary follow-up and reflection to make real changes in classroom practice. Teachers need active engagement, relevant content, and sustained support throughout the year to truly implement and refine new strategies. By offering multiple opportunities for learning and growth, I am creating an environment where teachers feel empowered and equipped to make a lasting impact on their students’ learning and success.
