Growth Mindset Plan

Learning is a task that can take place at any place and time. In order to learn, one needs curiosity, and the willingness to comprehend. The perspective that one is born with the knowledge or ability to do something, a fixed mindset, is fueled by being stagnant. Having a growth mindset, or the mindset that a new skill can be learned or obtained by practice, makes learning limitless. Having a growth mindset allows you to be ever changing, evolving, and learning in your endeavors. It opens the door for the power of “yet”.

The power of “yet” was actually taught to the district two years ago as the district initiative in efforts to sway the district into having a growth mindset as a whole. I will lead by example and be transparent on my journey of navigating the intricacies  of having a growth mindset. Although there are things I am knowledgeable about, there are many things that I have not mastered, “yet”.
The nature of your “mindset” is something that can be transformed and shifted from fixed to a growth. Scott Jeffery, explains how to obtain a growth mindset in four steps.

Step 1: Learn to Hear Your Fixed Mindset “Voice”

Step 2: Recognize that You Have a Choice

Step 3: Talk Back to it with a Growth Mindset Voice

Step 4: Take the Growth Mindset Action”

(Scott Jeffrey, 2024)

Step one can arguably be the most important step of the sequence. In order to believe something can happen for you, the idea must be a possibility that you can transform into a reality. If you are someone who is used to an environment surrounded by fixed mindsets, this can be the most challenging step. Fortunately, a growth mindset can be obtained by anyone who chooses to do so. Step two is all about knowing that despite the trials and tribulations you encounter along the way, your goal can still be obtained. As you continue to obtain that goal, step three comes into place, by helping to keep you grounded and motivated. Shutting out the thoughts of a fixed mindset, and encouraging yourself to keep striving towards your goal is the very definition of Talking Back With a Growth Mindset Voice. Last but certainly not least, put your plans and thoughts into action by doing what you stated and intended to do in order to transform your mindset into one of growth.

In my pursuit to promote the growth mindset I will use the following resources such as video, images, quotes and testimonials from others.

I will promote the growth mindset weekly if not daily when meeting with students individually, during whole class instruction, during small group instruction, during professional learning time with colleagues and whenever the opportunity presents itself. I will do this by reminding  myself and others that acquiring a new skill is possible with the proper resources, practice, and opportunity.

The growth mindset will be a continuous reminder of possibilities, as I face difficult or challenging tasks throughout this program, course, my career and life as a whole. As I figure things out along the way, I will remind myself of the four steps in keeping my mind grounded in a growth mindset when it sways to shift to a fixed one.
